Mission Accomplished: Shane & Huey

WAGS 4 Kids in Need, Meet Shane

Working Animals Giving Service for Kids in Need – Meet Shane!

In January of this year, we met Shane an amazing little six-year-old born with CHARGE Syndrome. Charge Syndrome is a genetic anomaly affecting approximately one in 12,000 births. In Shane’s case, he was born with a major heart defect requiring multiple medical procedures including two open-heart operations and the installation of a pacemaker. Shane is extremely nearsighted and has colobama which greatly limits his field of vision. He is also profoundly deaf in one ear and moderately deaf in the other. Shane was born with only one functioning kidney. He also has very low muscle tone, which contributes to mobility challenges.

Despite these challenges, Shane continues to be a courageous and curious little boy who loves to explore the world around him cautiously. He has surprised many of his care providers with his progress and recently had his tracheostomy removed, allowing him to begin vocalizing more, although he struggles with language and expression. While Shane has taken a few steps on his own, he is extremely reluctant to do so. His hearing and vision issues make it difficult for him to navigate without support and a reassuring hand. Shane’s family is hoping that a service dog will help Shane develop more confidence and learn about his surroundings, and bridge the gap between his special spirit and everyone he meets.

Thanks in large part to the generosity of the Trinity Rose Foundation, along with the support of Friends and Family… Shane’s New Year’s Wish has come true. It’s Christmas in July for Shane and his new Best Friend Huey!

(WOIO) – If you were blessed to know Susie Mettler, you already know she’s a very independent young lady.

Susie was a recent Perry High School graduate with honors. She was a talented athlete, with a great sense of humor, and a love for her animals.

Unfortunately, she passed over the Fourth of July holiday, leaving the Perry community heartbroken, but inspired to never give up.

“She wants the world to know just how wonderful life is, and how strong she is, and how strong she wants them to be,” said Susie’s mom, Tina Mettler.

A sledding accident last December left Susie a quadriplegic. 19 Action News reporter, Scott Taylor, met her as she was falling in love with a charity in northeast Ohio called Wags4Kids, which gives service dogs to children in need.

Susie was in a wheelchair for seven months. But after meeting her, you didn’t see the chair, all you saw was an excited young lady looking forward to her new dog, and accomplishing goals to be more independent.

“A week before she died, she did five laps in her manual wheelchair on her own at the CFC. She called me and said, ‘Mom! I did five laps by myself. I can do this,'” recalled Tina.

Susie said she wanted to be a motivational speaker. She already had a following, including young kids in Perry she had spoken to and inspired earlier this year. She spent time motivating others in rehab, and a lot of time with her family and her animals.

We will all miss Susie, but she continues to inspire all of us.

“You will never find a picture where she is not smiling. She would always say “Go Big or Go Home,'” said Tina.

If you would like to make a donation to Susie’s favorite charity, Wags 4 Kids, in her memory, go to their Facebook page.

OK ladies – I need your help here because I’m terrible with choosing. Which bachelor should I bid on for the Cleveland Have A Heart Bachelor Auction Raffle? The cause is well worth it too – Wags 4 Kids, who assist families in need get service dogs for the disabled.

So. Which bachelor should I bet all my raffle tickets on? I can’t decide, although I have narrowed it down to three, (which is just short of a miracle for me).

Check out the pics and bios and vote below!

Drew Golub, a DJ. Have A Heart asked him why a woman should bid on him. Let's see what he had to say: "Because Tinder isn't working! All joking aside you get a free dinner with a marginally attractive young man while helping fund the training of a service dog. Seems like a win win to me." Meet Dan Inks. Marketing Director at Townhall! Have A Heart asked him what's that most people don’t know about you? He said: "I want to write and animated cartoon series, about the wild events that take place in my life and make motion pictures. I like to rap funny stories, and I can juggle." Meet Tony Madalone. President/CEO at Fresh Brewed Tees. What do Tony's friends say about him? "Motivated, passionate, hard working, honest, adventurous (and a lot of other things haha)"

So. Who Should I pick? I’m buying a boatload of tix and putting them all on one bachelor. Who Would you pick?

Last Thursday, I was lucky enough to do a little bartending for a wonderful cause, WAGS 4 Kids. Not only was it a great time, the idea of helping families get much needed assistance dogs is an awesome feeling.
